Reviews - FOUR STARS - Battle for survival - By S. Deeth "Sheila Deeth" - Some families are majorly dysfunctional. Others just don't function right. Mike and Brenda, in Daniel Lance Wright's Paradise Flawed, fall into the latter category, with college daughter Jojo gazing on in dismay. How did Brenda "reel so far out of control" and why does Mike just step back? Mike's friend Ed suggests Mike's working himself into his grave. And so the family head off on vacation--to Paradise Mountain Resort. The dialog's finely tuned and realistic, though formalities of formatting sometimes let it down. The characters are plausible and well-(sometimes overly-)described. And the scenery's truly delightful. The author creates a beautiful early morning vista, with shooting stars and the wafting scent of coffee. But beauty here's as short-lived as Brenda's loveliness, and sudden terror reigns. The battle for survival is thrillingly told, survivors rising from one danger to the next, each individual proving invaluable for their skills and knowledge. But there are surprises beyond natural disaster, and a frantic chase through the mountains ensues as mysteries wait for resolution. Paradise Flawed is a satisfying action adventure with truly enjoyable characters and character flaws. Heroes don't all look like they've stepped out of fashion magazines, and even the overweight can fight and run and save the day. A little unedited in places, a little over-explained in others, this novel remains a thoroughly enjoyable read filled with excitement and surprise. Disclosure: I was given a free e-copy of this book by the publisher, Dream Books LLC, in exchange for an unbiased review.
About the Author
Daniel Lance Wright
Daniel Lance Wright, known to most as Danny, was born in the fall of 1950 in Lubbock, Texas to Kenneth and Bettye Wright. Home was a cotton farm for the first nineteen years of his life.Elementary, junior high and high school days, from the mid 50s through the flower-power era of the 60s, were all spent at the same place, Meadow. Meadow is a town of about 500 conservative farm folks and known for little more than a grain elevator and a cotton gin.Danny became interested in broadcasting and attended a summer-long radio/television course in 1969 in Houston and promptly went to work at a radio station in Lubbock in the fall of that same year. From that beginning, he rode a wave of employment in the broadcast industry, but the stint in radio was only a year and a half. In April, 1970 he landed a news writer/reporter job at KLBK TV in Lubbock and over the next two years solo anchored and co-anchored news sequences, adlibbed weathercasts, hosted half hour interview programs, MCd telethons and became lead staff announcer. In 1973 he went to KFDX TV in Wichita Falls and settled in as the weatherman for 10 years. The final 8 years there were as a television sales and marketing account executive. In 1991 he secured a position as regional advertising sales manager of KWTX TV in Waco and later promoted to Local sales manager over a department of eight advertising account executives. As is usually the case with mid-level management positions though, it turned into a liability when top management changed. In the spring of 2001 he was politely asked to find other employment. To Danny, a leap of faith was called for and took a writing hobby mainstream, joining writing organizations and a critique group. He also signed up for local writing courses and sought new venues to further his education and networking in the industry.Daniel Lance Wrights first published manuscript was released in 2007, Six Years Worth (www.fatherspress.com). The second novel, an action/adventure story, Paradise Flawed was released in fourth quarter 2009 (www.dreambooksllc.com ). About the Author
Ridiculously Simplified Synopsis - A Family In Need Of Help, A Company Needing More Money, And The Need To Win At All Costs.Summary - All Mike Hanson wants is a relaxing family vacation in the mountains of New Mexico; time away from his stressful Midland, Texas career and a chance to refocus on family. But the explosion of a gasoline tanker truck and subsequent forest fire not only change vacation plans but his entire life, sending Mike and other survivors on a dash for their lives. Its no accident. He is targeted to be eliminated.First Sentence - Are you sure its one of Weavers employees up there? asked Barry Ezell. Thats what our guy in Paradise tells me. Ezells man stood with his arms crossed leaning against the door jamb of the plush office. The sprawling EZ Oil Company headquarters was located on the west side of Midland, Texas. Sure looks suspicious though. Yeah, I think so, too. Ezell pushed away from his desk and rose. He paced around and sat on the front corner of it. This is baffling. How could Weaver Oilfield Tool and Supply possibly know what were doing in the northern mountains of New Mexico? Barry Ezell was in his seventies, bald with liver spots dotting his hairless pate and a grizzled fringe. He was stoop-shouldered and slight built with a hawkish nose. His washed out blue eyes, capable of an ice cold laser-intense stare, told the tale of a man willing to do anything to get what he wanted. Ezells henchman uncrossed his arms and fully entered the office. I dont think its coincidental..."Popular Tags - clean, death, destruction, family, fire, flawed, forest, new mexico, oil, paradise, suspense, texas, thriller, trapped
